How to Link Aadhaar Card with Pan Card: Ultimate Guide

The Indian government has made it mandatory for all citizens to link their Aadhaar card with their PAN card to promote transparency in financial transactions and curb tax evasion. 

If you have not linked your Aadhaar with your PAN yet, follow this step-by-step guide to check if your cards are linked and link them.


How to check if PAN card is linked with Aadhaar card?

  • Visit the Income Tax Department's e-filing website or Click Here
  • Then click on the Link Aadhaar Status option under the Quick Links section on the right side of the screen.

  • Then Enter your PAN card number and Aadhaar number in the respective fields.
  • Then click on the View Link Aadhaar Status button to check if your PAN is linked with your Aadhaar number.

  • If your Aadhaar is already linked with PAN, you will get a message on screen Aadhaar-PAN linking is already done.

  • If your Aadhaar card is not linked with your PAN card, the system will prompt you to link them.

How to link your Aadhaar with PAN

  • Visit the Income Tax Department's e-filing website or Click Here.
  • Click on the Link Aadhaar option under the Quick Links section on the right side of the screen.

  • Enter your PAN card number, Aadhaar number, and name as per Aadhaar in the respective fields.

  • Make sure that the details you enter are accurate and match the details mentioned in your Aadhaar card.
  • However, if your name as per Aadhaar matches with your name as per PAN, then you can proceed with the linking process. 
  • On the other hand, if a mismatch exists in the name, either in your PAN card or Aadhaar card, you will be prompted to correct it.
  • After you have entered the correct details, click on the Link Aadhaar button.
  • Then the system will display a pop-up message on the screen to confirm that you have successfully linked your Aadhaar with PAN.
  • Moreover, you can link your Aadhaar number with your PAN number through SMS as well. 
  • For this Send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 in the following format: UIDPAN<SPACE><12-digit Aadhaar number><SPACE><10-digit PAN number>.
  • After you have sent the SMS, you will receive a confirmation message on your registered mobile number.

Furthermore, it's important to note that the government has extended the last date for linking Aadhaar with PAN to 30th June 2023. Failure to link the two cards by this deadline may result in the deactivation of your PAN card.


Payment related information

The fee payment for PAN-Aadhaar Linkage need to be made through e-Pay Tax functionality available on e-filing Portal.

Please note, If the date of issue of your PAN is on or after 1st July 2017, you can directly submit linking request without fee payment.


Steps for payment through e-Pay Tax:

  • Provide your PAN, Confirm PAN and Mobile number to receive OTP Or navigate to post login e-File > e-Pay Tax> Select New Payment
  • Post OTP verification, you will be redirected to a page showing different payment tiles
  • Click Proceed on the Income Tax tile
  • Select AY as 2024-25 and Type of Payment - as other Receipts (500) and Continue
  • Preview the amount as Rs. 1000 under 'Others' field in tax break-up and proceed with further steps

Payment Verification Method:

Taxpayer will receive challan receipt on successful payment. User can also check bank account statement to ensure if amount was deducted or not.

Taxpayer can view and download the challan by navigating to e-File > e-Pay Tax> Payment History or check the challan status through “Know Payment Status” under Quick Links on e-Filing Home page.


Important Points

  • As per CBDT circular F. No. 370142/14/2022-TPL dated on 28th March 2023, person who has failed to intimate the Aadhaar number in accordance with section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (the Act) read with rule 114AAA shall face the consequences of the PAN becoming inoperative.
  • The consequences of PAN becoming inoperative shall not be applicable to those persons who have been exempted from linking PAN-Aadhaar.
  • Taxpayers who have been allotted a PAN as on 1st July 2017 and are not exempted from linking are liable to pay a non-refundable fee of Rs. 1000 for submission of PAN-Aadhaar linkage request. If linking is not done till 30th June 2023, the PAN will be marked as inoperative with effect from 1st July 2023.
  • Please pay the applicable non-refundable fee of Rs. 1000 through e-Pay Tax service to proceed with submission of Aadhaar-PAN linking request. Click here for payment related information.
  • Please make sure fee payment is done under Minor head 500 - Other Receipts(500) and Major head 0021 [Income Tax (Other than Companies)] in single challan

Note

Following categories are exempted from Aadhaar-PAN linking

  • NRIs
  • Not a citizen of India
  • age > 80 years as on date
  • state of residence is ASSAM, MEGHALAYA or JAMMU & KASHMIR
