Driving License Online in India - How to Apply

As most of us know that we need a Driving license in order to drive a motor vehicle in India, however there is a certain age to get the driving license in India. Now we can apply for Driving License Online almost from anywhere in India by just filling online form.

According to Motor Vehicle Act of 1998, it is an offence to derive a motor vehicle in a public place without any valid driving license.

You have to pass the online test (STALL Test) to get Learner's License. After the completion of its one month, you need to appear for driving test to get your permanent driving license.


Types of Driving License

In India there are different types of Driving Licenses that one can apply for as per there need/requirements or depending on the type of vehicle you plan to drive in the state, your jurisdiction's RTO will issue you with a specific license.
  • Learning License: Learning License is a type of License which is a must have in order to apply for Permanent Driving License.
  • Permanent Driving License: A Permanent License is a license which is used for personal use. This is valid for 20 years or till the 50 years of age of applicant.
  • Commercial Driving License: This License is required for driving Commercial Vehicles like Good or Passengers Vehicles. This is valid up to three years only. Types of Commercial driving licenses are: 
    • Light Goods Vehicle (LGV)
    • Medium Goods Vehicle (MGV)
    • Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) 
    • Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicle (HPMV)
  • International Driving Permit: This is the permission for driving on foreign land or abroad and it is valid for one year unlike other licenses it cannot be renewed, so applicant needs to reapply.

How to Apply for a Driving License

There are two ways to apply for a driving license in India:
  • Online Mode
  • Offline Mode

Apply DL Online

To apply for Driving License through Online mode, we need to follow the below steps:
  • Click here or Visit Parivahan Sewa website.
  • Click on Driver/Learners License as shown in below image.

  • Select the state from which you want to apply.

  • Select the "Apply for Learners License" option.

Apply License

  • Read the instructions and click Continue.

Select Continue

  • Select the appropriate Category and click submit.

Click Submit

  • Select the Authentication option and click submit to do the authentication

Select Authentication Type

  • Fill the complete Applicant details.
  • Upload the scanned copy of all required documents.
  • Pay the Application Fees.
  • Schedule a slot window for driving license test.
  • Visit the RTO and appear for the test on the scheduled slot window.
  • You will get the Driving License delivered at your door, if you pass the Driving Test.

Apply DL Offline

To apply for Driving License through Offline mode, we need to follow the below steps:
  • Visit the local RTO in your jurisdiction and get the Form 4 or download the Form 4 through the state transport website.
  • Fill the form completely and accurately and submit it to the nearest RTO office with all the required documents like, Address Proof and Identity Proof, etc.
  • Pay the Application Fee.
  • Schedule a slot window for the Driving License Test as per the availability.
  • Visit the RTO for the Test as per the schedule slot window.
  • You will get the Driving License delivered at your door, if you pass the Driving Test.

Steps to check Status of application Online

Applicants of Driving License can check the status of their application online through Ministry of Road Transport and Highways website. Below are the steps to check the status of the application:
  • Click here or Visit Parivahan Sewa website.
  • Click on "Application Status" as shown in below image.

Status of Application


  • Fill Application Number, Date of Birth and Captcha.

Click Submit

  • Click Submit, and the page will then show the status of you DL application.

Eligibility Criteria for Driving License

Fees to be Paid for DL/LL

9. Renewal of a driving license for which application is made after the grace period Rs. 300.00/- (Additional fee at the rate of Rupees One Thousand Only for delay of each year or part thereof reckoned from the date of expiry of the grace period shall be levied.)
10. Issue or renewal of license to a school or establishment for imparting instructions in driving Rs. 10000.00/-
11. Issue of duplicate license to a school or establishment for imparting instructions in driving Rs. 5000.00/-
12. An appeal against the orders of licensing authority referred to in rule 29 Rs. 500.00/-
13. Any application for change in address or any other particulars recorded in the driving license e.g., address etc. Rs. 200.00/-
